This seminar provided a timely opportunity to assess the future of investment in new music in the face of challenges for the music industry from 'digital disruptors' and the evolution of free online access to music, and of private equity's current interest in back catalogues. Delegates examined emerging ways for the industry to add value to new releases and live performances, including online crowd sourcing - and new options for artists, promoters, record companies and other stakeholders to increase revenue from live music by grassroots and established artists, e.g. through brand partnership, licensing and live streaming to multiple venues. It took place in the context of the implementation of the Live Music Act, encouraging commercially sustainable grassroots music, and 'Cliff's law', extending copyright for performers. The agenda also included discussion of how policymakers and industry can deliver the Government's vision for an 'Amazon' for copyright in a Digital Copyright Exchange and how rationalising the copyright market could shape the future music market.
