With the European Commission preparing to publish its next-step recommendations emanating from 2011's Green Paper on Online Gambling, this seminar offered a timely opportunity for policymakers, the gambling industry and other interested parties to discuss the future for gambling regulation in the UK and Europe.
Sessions examined options for the harmonisation of policy across member states, and discussion focused on the creation of a minimum pan-European standard, the next steps for dealing with the prevalence of cross-border illegal online gaming sites, the development of EU-wide consumer protection against fraud and for the prevention of 'problem' gambling, and the relationship of the gambling industry with societal groups, sports governing bodies and sports rights-holders.
