With the Government's "Call to Action" on obesity in England, which laid out new "national ambitions" to achieve a downward trend in the level of excess weight in children and adults by 2020, this seminar was a timely opportunity to assess the direction of policy and what more could be done to halt levels of obesity in the UK.
Delegates critically examined key features of the new strategy - a combination of local action on obesity, integrated interventions and commitments from the food and drink industry to reduce calorie intake - and how partnership with industry on reducing obesity should be implemented and monitored. And as responsibility for public health moved to local authorities, sessions brought out the latest thinking on how local partners would work together on delivering weight management services and developing holistic prevention plans, including through planning for green spaces and active transport. Further sessions asked whether the "Call to Action" goes far enough to tackle obesity - and looked forward to the future priorities for policy needed to halt the tide of obesity and head off future costs for the NHS.
