This seminar offered delegates a timely opportunity to consider the future of publicly-funded legal services, as the Government began its "fundamental look" at legal aid with the aim of creating a "stable and sustainable system providing access to justice for those who need it most". Discussions focused on what reform is necessary to guarantee access to aid, whilst ensuring the system remains financially sustainable for the future. Sessions examined the role legal aid plays in ensuring access to justice; the challenges a limited budget poses to the provision of quality local aid; and how changes to the tendering process are likely to affect both law firms and legal aid users.
