The seminar took place as BEIS analysed feedback from their recently-closed statutory review of the GCA.
The agenda was structured to facilitate discussion on how best to ensure a fair price for suppliers to large supermarkets, and examine priorities for the GCA and the potential for any further expansion of the role.
On the day, the main points of discussion focused on the culture change in the groceries retail market, rising awareness of the Groceries Code amongst suppliers, and a reduction in the number of suppliers experiencing code-related issues, as well as the options for expanding the role of the GCA to include primary producers and the ornamental sector.
Delegates also discussed the priorities for increasing transparency in the food supply chain - including reducing instances of food fraud through cross-sector collaboration, effectively marketing the quality of British produce both domestically and internationally, and the future regulatory challenges posed by Brexit for the agrifood industry.
