Delegates considered next steps for improving the quality of palliative care services, including widening choice and reducing variation in access. It took place in light of the Department of Health’s commitments to further personalisation of care, greater accessibility for all sections of the population, and to developing innovation in delivery, following the findings of the independent review carried out by the Choice in End of Life Care Programme Board in 2015.

Attendees also considered the future of regulation in the context of the CQC’s thematic review on inequalities in end of life care, published in May 2016. Further sessions looked at the impact on the provision of palliative care of commissioning new models of care and Sustainability and Transformation Plans - and at key issues relating to skills, education and workforce development, with new guidance published by the GMC this year. There was also discussion on forthcoming priorities for paediatric, palliative and end of life services as NICE finalises its guidelines in this area.
