The future for transport policy in the North

July 2016

Ahead of Transport for the North (TfN), becoming a statutory body by 2017, this seminar provided an opportunity to discuss the development of transport policy for the North of England and the next steps for regional devolution of powers more widely.
Timed to follow the publication of the Northern Transport Strategy spring 2016 report as part of the Government’s aim of creating a Northern Powerhouse, delegates discussed the funding structure for TfN, including the Government’s commitment to provide £50 million over the course of this Parliament to TfN. They also considered priorities for new funding for local regions following the announcement of a new £300 million Transport Development Fund and £475 million that will go towards supporting large local transport infrastructure.
Further sessions examined the new responsibilities due to be conferred on local authorities for the delivery of local transport services as the Buses Bill progresses through Parliament - and assess infrastructure priorities and necessary transport network upgrades in light of the National Infrastructure Commission’s High Speed North report that recommended “immediate and very significant investment for action now” and that decisions should be reached on key transport projects by December 2017.
