Delegates at the seminar discussed the future direction of higher-level vocational and technical education in England.
The seminar came as Government planned to reform the current vocational system to create clear, high-quality routes for the development of professional and technical skills.
It also offered delegates an opportunity to consider the future for Degree Apprenticeships - intended to combine both the academic study from a traditional university degree and the practical experience and wider employment skills of an Apprenticeship - including the challenges for employer engagement, university participation and their role within the wider skills system.
Further sessions explored the lessons that can be learnt from the German vocational education system and the Government’s plans for the expansion of elite National Colleges - intended to help the development of high level technical skills in those industries or sectors where there is an identified skills gap.
The seminar brought together key policymakers with stakeholders including FE colleges, universities, awarding organisations, vocational training providers, representatives of employers and trade unions, academics and others with an interest in these issues.
