June 2016

Price: £95 PLUS VAT
Format: DOWNLOADABLE PDF

This seminar focused on student housing, including university-owned halls, privately-owned halls and the private rented sector, as well as the latest trends in investment and the market, regulation of houses of multiple occupancy and student rights.
Delegates discussed how to meet the expected rise in demand for student housing emanating from the removal of the cap of university student recruitment - implemented in September 2015 - and increasing international student inflows. They also considered key issues relating to the planning system, the increasing trend for investment in large, managed developments and the likely impact of new taxes and regulations for buy-to-let landlords.
The agenda additionally looked at the quality of student housing alongside value for money and particular concerns around rent inflation in light of the increase in student maintenance loans from September 2016.
Further sessions examined the regulation of private rented accommodation, including the potential expansion of mandatory HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupancy) licensing to all properties and how universities, local authorities and students’ unions should address student-landlord disputes.
