Bringing together policymakers with key stakeholders in health, the food and drink industry, education and Local Government - this seminar examined latest developments in policy for tackling obesity.
It was a timely opportunity to discuss the Government's childhood obesity strategy, due out in the summer, focusing primarily on preventative measures in earlier years - as well as policy priorities on the nutritional content of foods, after the report into carbohydrates and health, released by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, which recommended halving free sugar energy intake.
Delegates assessed best practice for local communities and industry for encouraging healthy lifestyles, improving obesity outcomes, providing consumer information and food marketing restrictions - in light of the Public Health England’s review on the evidence for action on sugar reduction and the Health Select Committee’s recent report into Government’s policy priorities for addressing childhood obesity.
Sessions also considered the role of Public Health England and Clinical Commissioning Groups in preventing diet-related diabetes and cardiovascular disease - along with NICE guidelines on obesity, looking at a range of approaches at a population level, including interventions for lifestyle weight management.
