The future for policy on biodiversity and natural capital in the UK: priorities, practicalities and targets

May 2016

Timed ahead of the publication of the EU’s 'Fitness Check’ on key conservation directives in July 2016, this seminar provided a timely opportunity to assess the Biodiversity 2020 targets in the UK. It came in the context of the global agreement on long-term climate change targets at the COP 21.
Delegates discussed the latest progress made towards achieving these targets and next steps for Government policy, such as the new ‘Open Environment’ initiative, announced in a speech delivered by the Environment Secretary, which aims to improve the use of data and technology in environmental monitoring and will be developed further over the next 12 months. They also considered the next phase of the Natural Capital Committee’s work, following the manifesto commitment to extend its life to the end of the current Parliament and to develop a ‘25 Year Plan’ to restore UK biodiversity.
Further sessions also evaluated funding opportunities available to conservation schemes following the announcement of a £4.6m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the ‘Back from the Brink’ partnership project that aims to protect more than 100 species against extinction, in addition to the priorities for conservation planning as part of large infrastructure projects and the development of urban green spaces.
