Bringing together key stakeholders and policymakers, this seminar was a timely opportunity to assess the progress being made and next steps for protecting young people online. Following the implementation of 'unavoidable choice' filtering systems by the big 4 ISPs - and Ofcom reporting low take up of such systems - those attending discussed the key policy priorities going forward.
Discussion drew on latest trends in young people's access to and use of mobiles. Delegates considered the progress being made in protecting young social media users, in the face of growing challenges with more access to the internet outside homes and schools on a widening array of devices. They also discussed next steps for involving parents more actively in filtering content and mentoring their children, and the impact of the clampdown on online piracy and file sharing - both the positive effects, and concerns about actually nudging young people to darker corners of the internet.
