Following the publication of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission's 2015 State of the Nation report, delegates at this seminar considered measures to raise the attainment of the most disadvantaged pupils in England.
Sessions reflected on the importance of teaching quality in improving students' life chances and assessed the impact of the Pupil Premium, as well as strategies to raise the quality of teaching in the most deprived areas of the country, including the progress of the Talented Leaders programme.
Further sessions brought out latest thinking on steps to reduce inequality in education, such as encouraging more pupils from poor backgrounds to take up 'facilitating' subjects, as highlighted in Oxford University's publication Subject to Background. The agenda also examined the effects of selective schooling on social mobility, as well as addressing concerns surrounding admissions policy and accessibility to high-performing schools.
