Rt Hon Henry McLeish
Guests of Honour: Rt Hon Sir Alan Beith MP, Chair, Justice Select Committee; Phil Wheatley, Director General, National Offender Management Service and Rt Hon Henry McLeish, Chairman, Scottish Prisons Commission
As the Government begins consulting on where to build five new prisons and private contractors bid to design, build and manage the institutions, this seminar will examine the future financing and management of the system. Sessions will focus on the design plans for new, larger-scale prisons and how the existing infrastructure - and the prison service itself - should be modernised to meet the needs of prisoners, those working in the criminal justice system and society as a whole.
We are delighted that Rt Hon Sir Alan Beith MP, Chair, Justice Select Committee; Rt Hon Henry McLeish, Chairman, Scottish Prisons Commission; Professor Andrew Coyle CMG, International Centre for Prison Studies, School of Law, King's College, London; and Phil Wheatley, Director General, National Offender Management Service have agreed to deliver keynote addresses at this seminar.
Other confirmed speakers include: Jonathan Aitken, Chairman, Prison Reform Working Group, The Centre for Social Justice; Dr Elaine Crawley, Director, Salford University Centre for Prison Studies; Frances Crook, Director, The Howard League for Penal Reform; Paul McDowell, Chief Executive, Nacro; Colin Moses, National Chairman, Prison Officers Association; Vicky O'Dea, Operations Director, Serco Group; Paul Tidball, President, Prison Governors Association; and Amelia Walker, Head of Centre of Service Transformation, Local Government Information Unit. Further senior speakers are being approached.
Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Penal Affairs Group and Baroness Stern, Vice-Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Penal Affairs Group has kindly agreed to chair this seminar.
