Next steps for retirement income policy - the post-pension freedoms market, consumer advice and regulation

Morning, Tuesday, 11th December 2018

Central London

THIS EVENT IS CPD CERTIFIED

This seminar will be a timely opportunity to discuss the implications of policy developments in the sector and steps that can be taken to grow and protect retirement income in the UK.

The seminar takes place as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) publishes its Retirement Outcomes Review highlighting issues with competition and switching, charges and transparency for consumers and lack of innovation in the market and open a consultation on possible remedies alongside their consultation with The Pensions Regulator (TPR) on a new joint strategy on regulating the pensions and retirement income sector.

It also follows the announcement, by the Government, of a feasibility study on the implementation of the Pensions Dashboard - a project designed to increase consumer engagement with their retirement saving.

Delegates will discuss the protection of savers and retirees and the latest thinking on how to tackle fraud and concerns over employers who fail to meet basic guidelines, following the proposal of increased powers for The Pensions Regulator in the Defined Benefit white paper. Planned sessions will focus on the regulation of the pensions sector with the TPR and the FCA expected to publish their joint strategy for retirement income this Autumn, and consider the potential impact of proposals on the future of risk assessment for investment, employer duties and transparency in retirement income.

Further sessions will touch on what more can be done to stimulate innovation from providers, competitiveness in the market and the future for the annuities market. Discussion will follow calls from the Work and Pensions Committee for guidance to be mandatory when seeking to exercise pension freedoms, steps that can be taken to encourage switching and inform consumer behaviour.
