Next steps for UK oil and gas

Morning, Monday, 25th March 2024

This conference will focus on priorities for the oil and gas industry in the UK, in the context of newly government-backed oil and gas exploration and extraction licenses in 2023 and more recently in 2024.

It will bring stakeholders together with policymakers to discuss next steps and key issues, assessing recent developments and the future role of the oil and gas sector in contributing to the UK’s energy mix and security strategy.

Delegates will also examine progress, priorities and prospects for decarbonisation in the oil and gas sector with plans for its expansion, in the context of net zero policy ambitions and advances in the contribution of renewable energy production.

Further areas of discussion include finance and investor confidence, and the future shape of the energy market with oil and gas alongside nuclear and renewable ventures.

The agenda also looks at considerations for securing the supply chain and skills development, as well as priorities for licensing, planning and mapping of exploration and extraction sites.

We are pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with: Graham Stuart MP, Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, DESNZ; Tom Wheeler, Director of Operations, North Sea Transition Authority; and Professor John Underhill, Director for Energy Transition, Aberdeen University.

Sessions in the agenda include:

  • policy: government priorities - alternative approaches - key issues for balancing energy security with sustainability targets
  • role of O&G: the future UK energy mix and market - optimising the potential contribution of oil and gas to UK energy security - costs, finance and investor confidence - sector priorities
  • implementation: economic and geopolitical pressures - supply chain, skills and workforce - licensing, planning and mapping of exploration and extraction sites
  • decarbonisation: priorities and practicalities for the UK oil and gas industry - technology and innovation - collaboration - CCUS - costs - mitigation, regulation and monitoring of environmental impact

The conference will be an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who are due to attend from DESNZ; Defra; DfT; DLUHC; CCC; Department for the Economy, NI; GLD; FCDO; Homes England; OBR; OEP; and the Welsh Government.
