Next steps for the Northern Powerhouse

Morning, Thursday, 20th January 2022

This conference will examine policy priorities for the Northern Powerhouse going forward and the impact of the Government’s proposed Levelling Up White Paper.

It will be a timely opportunity to discuss how key issues are tackled in the white paper, as well as what is needed to deliver on the needs of the Northern Powerhouse in terms of supporting economic growth and the development of pan-regional and city-region infrastructure.

Delegates will also consider next steps for the region more broadly, linking the Northern Powerhouse with broader policy developments such as the National Infrastructure Strategy and the UK Innovation Strategy, as well as the role of devolution in building the Northern Powerhouse.

We are pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from Dr Annette Bramley, Director, N8 Research Partnership; Barry Hodgson, Deputy Director, National Innovation Centre for Data; Lesley Moody, President, North East England Chamber of Commerce; Henri Murison, Director, Northern Powerhouse Partnership; and Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader, Oldham Council; and Cabinet Member for Economic and Social Reform, Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Overall, the agenda will bring out latest thinking on:

  • driving economic development and recovery in the region
  • engagement with businesses to support balanced growth across the North of England
  • the role of infrastructure in boosting growth and regeneration
  • building education, research, and development systems
  • taking forward the Levelling Up White Paper and broader policy

The discussion is bringing together stakeholders with key policy officials who are due to attend from BEIS; the CLGU; the DCMS; DIT; the DWP; Homes England; the ORR; and the Welsh Government.
