Morning, Monday, 25th April 2022

This conference will examine the European Green Deal and the key priorities for achieving the aim for Europe to be the first climate-neutral continent.

A key focus will be the opportunities and implications for stakeholders in the UK and internationally, including in the areas of business and research collaboration, trade, and policy coordination, as well as possible challenges that lie ahead.

We are pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador of the European Union to the United Kingdom; Jytte Guteland, Lead Climate Negotiator, European Parliament and Jacquelyn MacLennan, Partner, White & Case - as well as contributions from AECOM; Aldersgate Group; Melius Homes; National Grid; NFU Scotland; and Visa Europe.

  • targets - looking at what will be needed to achieve the ambitious goal for Europe to become a role model in reaching net-zero and securing a green and sustainable future
  • progress - looking at the European Green Deal, its results so far and its effects on the UK
  • partnerships - strategies for establishing stronger working relationships with the UK and other non-EU nations
  • what can be learned for the UK - opportunities for learning from the European Green Deal and other international strategies to refine the UK net-zero policy pathway, and help build relationships

Potential strategies for EU/UK collaboration

  • opportunities - building on shared goals for net-zero transitions that:
    • place sustainability and environment protection at their core alongside economic targets
    • support stakeholders in a just transition through climate change adaptation and mitigation
    • focus on decarbonisation targets tailored to key sectors including agriculture, energy, transport and manufacturing systems in both the EU and the UK
  • assessing challenges for joint working - looking at potential areas of regulatory divergence on cross border collaboration on climate and emissions targets
  • innovation and problem solving - research and commercial opportunities in modernisation to:
    • deliver net-zero ambitions
    • reduce costs
    • foster cooperation, international commerce and economic development
