This conference considered next steps for improving welfare and safety in sport, both at elite and grassroots level.

It presented an opportunity to assess the progress made so far in implementing the recommendations of the Duty of Care in Sport Review, led by Baroness Grey-Thompson, and to consider what further action might be needed across the sport sector.

Delegates discussed priorities for improving staff and athlete welfare in high-performance sport - looking at what more might be done to tackle abuse and bullying, develop good governance and scrutiny, and support elite transition.

Attendees also considered the extent to which the Government’s Mental Health and Elite Sport Action Plan sufficiently addresses issues around mental welfare and possible next steps for its delivery, and also looked at wider issues around mental health in elite sport programmes - including the impact of potential future funding changes.

Further sessions looked at the way ahead for Duty of Care in grassroots sport - including the development of standardised safeguarding services for children and vulnerable adults, fostering leadership and best practice, and improving education and training provisions - and also considered what further policy support might be needed to help organisations meet resource challenges.
