This conference brought together policymakers and key stakeholders to discuss the next steps for supporting innovation in the UK energy sector - assessing the future direction of policy and the effectiveness of measures already in place.

Delegates considered priorities for incentivising innovation across energy infrastructure, including the role of government funding and the impact of initiatives such as the Energy Innovation Programme and the Small Modular Reactors competition, in the context of the Clean Growth Strategy and the Industrial Strategy.

Further sessions assessed how best to accelerate innovation across energy generation, efficiency and storage, and how less established technologies like marine energy and waste-to-fuel can be commercialised and brought to market.

It also followed the consultation on small-scale low carbon generation of electricity, and the measures to support innovation and a route to market.

Delegates assessed the impact of innovation on consumer engagement, reducing customer bills, and maximising the use of existing renewable energy assets, as well as developments in community energy projects.

Further sessions brought out latest thinking on collaboration and addressing potential barriers to finance.

It was also an opportunity to discuss what is needed from government to help engage international investors and businesses in the energy sector following the announced £5bn Energy Investment Portfolio, as well as how higher education can help upgrade the energy system.

The agenda also looked at opportunities for collaboration in research and brought together key stakeholders including universities, scientific Research Councils, industry and their supply chains to examine what more is needed to support the development of the energy system and strengthen the UK’s skills base.
