This seminar considered the next steps for protecting research integrity, ensuring that UK research is reproducible and properly executed.
The conference included discussion on updates to the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, due to be published by Universities UK in October. Delegates assessed the way forward for implementation of the Concordat and steps for achieving 100% compliance, along with changing the culture around research integrity more broadly.
Delegates also addressed the impact on research integrity of the growing open data culture in academic publishing, examining how imaginative technology solutions might reform academic research and publishing. Those attending considered the impact of open science on improving reproducibility and replication of results, along with other measures such as providing ongoing training and mentoring to researchers and developing incentives for good practice.
Further sessions looked at the transparency of clinical trials in the UK, including discussion on the HRA’s Make it Public consultation, along with their broader strategy to realise research transparency. This followed the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee’s inquiry on clinical trials which recommended that the Government commit to the requirements set out in the EU Clinical Trials Regulation post-Brexit, and that measures be taken to sanction failed compliance.
