This seminar considered next steps for implementing the key commitments included as part of the Mayor’s Culture Strategy for London.

Sessions discussed the way forward for improving the range and numbers of those participating in London’s arts and culture sector, following the publication of Arts Council England’s annual report, showing a decline in visitor numbers to its National Portfolio Organisations, particularly in London.

Delegates also shared latest thinking on what further work is needed to support the development of cultural spaces and facilities.

Discussion took place on the potential role for new planning frameworks in growing the availability of artist workspaces, as well as what support may be needed for performance spaces such as theatres and music venues - including delivering the Agent of Change principle as part of planning policy.

Further sessions considered next steps for improving access to finance for creative and cultural businesses and individual creative professionals in the capital, including examining the progress made so far on developing Creative Enterprise Zones.

There was also discussion on key priorities for developing a skilled workforce for the sector in the longer term - looking at developing education and career pathways in arts and creative subjects and increasing employment opportunities in London’s creative industries.

Taking place as Waltham Forest delivered a programme of cultural events as the London Borough of Culture for 2019, delegates also considered ways in which cultural offerings can be made more inclusive and open to audiences and participants from a diverse range of backgrounds, and examined strategies for ensuring that there is the widest possible exposure to potential benefits to broader health and wellbeing from increased engagement with arts and culture.
