This conference examined the key priorities for road infrastructure and the Strategic Road Network (SRN).

It was an opportunity to assess the priorities for Road Investment Strategy 3 (RIS3), and investment in the SRN, as well as looking at smart motorway rollout and decarbonisation plans.

It brought together key stakeholders with policymakers, areas for discussion included:

  • RIS3 - priorities for: Strategic Road Network development & improvement ◦ tackling supply chain issues ◦ achieving economic, sustainability & wider societal benefits
  • RIS2 - progress on meeting goals ◦ what can be learned for the development of RIS3
  • smart motorway schemes - the future following the recent pause to rollout ◦ addressing safety concerns going forward
  • future development - preparing for emerging demands, challenges & opportunities ◦ the wider use of zero emission vehicles ◦ associated implications for road pricing

We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with David Buttery, Director, Roads Strategy, Department for Transport; Nick Harris, Chief Executive, National Highways; and Sneha Patel, Deputy Director, Highways, Office of Rail and Road.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DfT; ORR; NIC; Transport Scotland; the DCMS; GLD; HM Treasury; the NAO; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from both Houses of Parliament.
