This conference examined policy priorities for tackling flooding and coastal erosion following the launch of the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy (FCERM) and in light of long-term challenges being faced around climate change, investment, infrastructure, and research.
It was a timely opportunity for delegates to discuss the FCERM Action Plan 2021 and assess the progress made in meeting its key objectives, as well as how priorities for flood and coastal erosion risk management dovetail with wider policy priorities, such as the National Infrastructure Strategy.
We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from Keith Davis, Director, Defra Value for Money, National Audit Office; and Steven Tupper, Manager of Flood Risk Strategy and National Adaptation, Environment Agency.
The agenda brought out latest thinking on:
- priorities emerging from the Flood Action Plan and Climate Change Risk Assessment
- engaging key stakeholders in shaping policy, setting effective guidance, and adaptation building
- public investment in flood prevention and ways to leverage private investment channels
- the role of plans to ‘Build Back Greener’ in strengthening flood resilience
- developing solutions to combat the increase and severity of flooding
- the future of flooding reinsurance and developing effective insurance regimes
The discussion brought together stakeholders with key policy officials who attended from BEIS; the CCC; DAERA, NI; Defra; the DfT; the DfI, NI; DLUHC; the Geospatial Commission; the National Audit Office; Natural England; the NIC; Ofwat; the UK Space Agency; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Commons Library.
