This conference was an opportunity to discuss priorities for driving up quality, both in the context of the pandemic and following changes to post-16 qualifications, which designate apprenticeships as one of the main options for post-16 progression alongside A Levels and T Levels.

We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from: Jonathan Mitchell, Deputy Director, Portfolio and Partnerships, IfATE; Kathryn Marshall, Apprenticeship Senior Manager, Lloyds Banking Group; Vice Chair, Apprenticeship Ambassador Network; and Simon Field, Director, Skills Policy.

Delegates assessed remaining issues and next steps in light of the areas of emphasis highlighted in the IfATE apprentice guide to quality apprenticeships - with a focus on centring the perspective of apprentices.

The discussion also considered lessons learned from past provision, looking at examples of best practice to inform future delivery.

The agenda brought out latest thinking on:

  • improving apprenticeships - priorities in the wake of the pandemic
  • clarity - on the induction process, the learning journey, and expectations
  • provision - quality training on and off the job
  • alignment with skills needs
  • consistency - how best to achieve equity in apprenticeship delivery in England
  • assessment and standards - priorities, including the role of end-point assessments

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DfE; the DWP; the Cabinet Office; CADW; the DCMS; the DIT; the Department for the Economy, NI; the GLD; the MoJ; the VOA; and the Welsh Government.
