Following NHS England figures showing waiting time targets for A&E departments and Ambulance services are being missed, this timely seminar provided an opportunity to consider the priorities for urgent and emergency care services.

Bringing together stakeholders and policymakers, sessions considered the potential impact of the Ambulance Response Programme and of key commitments for improving services and managing pressures outlined in the ‘Next steps on the NHS Five Year Forward View’, including the introduction of front-door clinical streaming and the standardised rollout of Urgent and Treatment Centres (UTCs) by Spring 2018.

Delegates also examined the emergency services’ preparation and response to major incidents, priorities for the urgent and emergency care workforce, as well as the next steps for NHS 111 - both in going online for 2017 and in increasing the percentage of clinical assessments provided by the service.

Further areas for discussion included the use of data analytics to improve service efficiency and the alignment of renewed social care funding with emergency services in providing an integrated response to delayed transfers of care.
