With Transport for the North (TfN) expected to become England’s first sub-national transport body later this year and with the forthcoming publication of the Northern Transport Strategy, this conference considered the way forward for devolved transport powers and improving transport across the North.
Sessions looked at the future of transport in Northern England along with the stakeholder engagement and evidence gathering steps that will facilitate the development of the new transport strategy. With the election of Metro Mayors across England, sessions also looked at the transport priorities for both newly-elected Mayors and major regions, including the need for decentralisation, developing regional transport strategies and the role of transport in local growth.
The seminar took place in the context of the release of the Government’s Transport Investment Plan and the TfN’s Integrated Road and Rail reports and discussed the aims and requirements for developing major road, rail and airport infrastructure in Northern England, including new approaches for infrastructure development, quantifying the economics benefits of transport investment, the importance of connectivity and international comparisons.
In addition delegates assessed the next steps for improving public transport services; such as creating a passenger-centric transport system, developing partnerships and service integration and utilising new technologies.
