This conference assessed the priorities for transport infrastructure and governance in the North of England.
Delegates examined key measures expected in the Strategic Transport Plan, such as implementing smarter transport systems, improving rail links spanning the region - including developing NPR - and further upgrades to the Major Road Network, as TfN finalises it proposals.
Sessions looked at priorities for infrastructure investment across the North, with the Government allocating £37m for developing NPR, adding to the £300m investment aimed at ensuring HS2 is compatible with future NPR services. Discussion included policy recommendations on the next steps for city transport developments, suggested in the National Infrastructure Assessment.
Attendees discussed on the role of local authorities, in the context of on-going bidding for funding from the Transforming Cities Fund, and renewed commitment to the Trans-Pennine Rail network as part of Network Rail’s Great North Rail Project.
Further sessions focused on the priorities for passenger services, including the recent unveiling of a new major rail review by the Transport Secretary, looking at the structure of the entire rail industry, as well as the potential impact on infrastructure and future connectivity in the North of the Government’s announcement of a one-year delay on the HS2 Phase 2b Hybrid-Bill.
