Next steps for stroke care in England: policy, prevention and treatment

This seminar brought together leading clinicians and key stakeholders from the NHS and others more widely to consider the next steps for the prevention, care and treatment of stroke in England.

It took place as policymakers considered the way ahead for developing a national plan for stroke - which is expected to take an integrated service approach including community, ambulance and secondary care - and build on the 10-year National Stroke Strategy that came to an end in December last year.

With NHS RightCare driving the use of anticoagulants for patients with atrial fibrillation as part of the NHS Five Year Forward View, delegates considered further action that might be taken to improve the prevention of stroke.

They also examined latest thinking on measures taken to enhance care - looking at the quality and availability of stroke services - as well as the way ahead for treatment, with NHS England committing investment in new procedures, such as mechanical thrombectomy.

Attendees also discussed adapting services to meet the challenges raised by an ageing population, particularly relating to rehabilitation and community stroke care.

Further sessions looked at the future for the stroke care pathway - including the role of STPs and Academic Health Science Networks in driving forward innovation, with AHSNs distributing mobile ECG devices across England.

Delegates also examined key issues around the recruitment and retention of the specialised stroke workforce, and priorities for reducing unwarranted variation - as the Getting It Right First Time programme leads a review on stroke.
