Drawing together policymakers, investors and key stakeholders from across grassroots and high performance sport to consider the future for funding in the UK, this conference followed the first annual report on the progress of delivering the aims set out in Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation, which focused on maximising the social impact from public funding, as well as reducing reliance by attracting greater private investment, and driving efficiencies to develop sustainable business models for the future.

Delegates examined the extent to which public investment channels and strategies are effective in the current financial landscape and demonstrate value for money at both grassroots and elite level, the options to review state aid spend on sports infrastructure and introduce tax exemptions after the UK withdraws from the EU, and how to address the funding shortfall caused by declining lottery revenues, rising operational costs and growing competition for government support.

Further sessions considered the way forward for driving commercial income generation, particularly focusing on effective marketing and distribution, developing the asset value of sport venues, and opportunities for collaboration across the sector in order to attract corporate sponsorship.
