Focusing on next steps for apprenticeships, skills development, careers guidance and further education in London, following the Mayoral election, this conference was timed to bring out discussion on emerging priorities for policy at City Hall in the light of key manifesto pledges - such as the ‘Skills for Londoners taskforce’ and promoting the devolution of further education funding.

The seminar took into account national policy developments affecting skills, such as the confirmation in the Autumn Statement of plans for the adult education budget to be devolved to London from 2019/20.

Delegates examined reforms to technical education outlined in the  Post-16 Skills Plan, and their potential impact on businesses in London. The seminar was informed by the Technical and Further Education Bill, which includes plans to change the role of the Institute for Apprenticeships and require information sharing between local authorities, colleges and Government.

The conference also focused on Government’s four London area reviews of post-16 education and training institutions - with latest thinking on how FE provision can most effectively meet the needs of London’s economy - and priorities for schools, colleges and employers, as Government develops a Comprehensive Careers Strategy.

Further sessions assessed the way forward for the accessibility, quality and range of apprenticeships available; meeting the unique needs of London’s labour market; challenges and opportunities presented by devolution; the future employability of London’s workforce; and the creation of further career opportunities in the Capital.

This conference brought together policymakers with frontline stakeholders from agencies, university and college leaders; academics and other higher education professionals; representatives from students’ unions; businesses and their advisors; interest groups and the voluntary sector and commentators and members of the national and trade press.
