Delegates at this seminar focused on priorities for school leadership in England looking at headteacher standards and support, leadership in schools, recruitment and next steps for school governance.

Sessions examined key proposals in the Department for Education’s recent ‘Educational Excellence Everywhere’ White Paper, including changes which aim to expand the role of the country’s top headteachers and middle leaders, and attract outstanding leaders and middle leaders to work in challenging schools and areas.

It was timed to follow Ofsted’s review into the effectiveness of school governance, and examined issues such as proposals to remove parent governors; the governance of MATs; the training requirements for governors, how Governor recruitment can be improved and whether they should be paid for their work, as recommended by the Chief Inspector for Education.

Delegates also considered how the concerns of the headteacher profession can be tackled and reflect on progress made since the publication of the headteacher standards review and options for middle leaders and senior leadership teams to be used to ease some of the pressures on headteachers.

With headteachers in both primary and secondary schools becoming increasingly difficult to recruit, further sessions discussed latest thinking on professional development and its role in supporting heads and the senior leadership teams within schools.

The conference brought together Parliamentarians and senior officials with key stakeholders including school and college leaders, heads of departments, school governing bodies, teachers and teaching unions, governance organisations, subject associations, professional development providers, local authority representatives, education consultants, academics and other interested parties.
