The future of school buildings and key issues around capital expenditure in education was the focus for this seminar.
Delegates considered the impact of the Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP) on those schools allocated funding and looked ahead to phase two. This followed the release of the Department for Education’s annual update, which suggested both a possible overspend for its first phase and a delay for the project.
The seminar also provided an opportunity to discuss the programme’s progress and prospects as the National Audit Office finalised its performance assessment. It also followed the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) report Better Spaces for Learning, calling for changes in communication between schools, the Education Funding Agency, designers and builders, and for more flexibility in the design of schools.
Sessions also looked at steps that can be taken to support schools not included in PSBP but still require improvements, and innovative approaches to financing the refurbishment and building of schools.
