This conference assessed the next steps for UK rail infrastructure management and development - and the policy and regulatory environment for future expansion and network modernisation.
Delegates discussed the outlook for major project delivery and the pipeline for new schemes to upgrade and extend the network - with proposals put forward for Phase 2 of HS2, the announcement of £300 million in extra spending to improve rail links between Northern cities, and the Government setting out the public funds available in Control Period 6.
They also considered opportunities for the modernisation of the British rail system, following announcements in the Industrial Strategy and Autumn Budget - including key priorities for freight and digital infrastructure.
Further sessions examined key findings from the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into the current system of planning and delivering investment in rail infrastructure, as well as the potential impact of reforms announced by Network Rail aimed at opening up involvement for more companies in infrastructure investment and delivery.
There was also discussion on the challenges for securing the domestic supply chain and skills base into the future, and for balancing the priorities of the range of rail users and other stakeholders - including the investment in infrastructure needed to support passenger development, promote economic growth and address environmental concerns.
