The seminar assessed the next steps for delivering postgraduate research in the UK.
Delegates considered the implementation of the new Doctoral Loans system as HEIs prepare for its launch in the 2018/2019 academic year and the role of CDTs and DTPs in current doctoral provision.
Those attending also looked at likely measures that could be taken to increase co-operation between different research councils and potential strategies to provide doctoral students with soft skills through the interaction between academia and industry.
Further sessions on the day examined the consequences of insufficient funding for doctoral students, the importance of mental health support, students’ placements within universities’ industrial partners, the need to facilitate the flow from academia to industry and how to foster international co-operation in research.
