This conference discussed the next steps for genomic medicine in the NHS - looking at key issues for regulation, challenges for adoption and priorities for research.

It followed the announcement by the Health and Social Care Secretary of the ambition to sequence five million genomes in the UK over the next five years.

It was also an opportunity to consider the early indications from the new NHS Genomic Medicine Service - as well as the next steps for NHS Genomic Medicine Centres (GMCs) as they aimed to deliver the pledge of 90,000 samples of DNA from patients and family members with rare diseases and cancer.

Delegates discussed the priorities for evaluating the evidence and sharing learning from the 100,000 Genomes Project - with the Project aiming to have completed sequencing by the end of the year - and assessed the opportunities to advance other elements of personalised medicine by building upon the infrastructures established.

Planned sessions examined the Government’s response to the Commons Science and Technology Committee’s report, Genomics and genome editing in the NHS, which addressed concerns around the need for investment in NHS digital infrastructure and training, along with capturing the commercial value of NHS datasets.

Attendees assessed the next steps for education and training, focusing on the progress of the Genomics Education Programme, which looks to embed genomics into relevant training courses. Delegates also discussed priorities for patients, including key issues for patient data and ensuring public trust and support.
