With the UK in the process of leaving the EU, this timely seminar considered the future for attracting international students to higher education institutions in the UK. It took place with a 7% decline in the number of EU nationals applying to UK universities for the coming year, according to figures produced by UCAS.

Delegates considered the future for international student visa policy, including the status of EU citizens studying at UK universities, following the publication of research from the Home Office and the ONS indicating that fewer overseas students overstayed their visas than was previously claimed. It also took place in light of the publication of the Education Select Committee’s inquiry into the impact of Brexit on Higher Education, which recommended a ‘light touch’ approach to immigration controls for EU students and the removal of international students from the net migration target.

Further sessions assessed the next steps for promoting the UK as a destination for international students as the UK prepares to leave the EU, including what can be learnt from previous marketing campaigns and from the success of other countries, as well as opportunities for growth around the world.
