With the number of international students coming to the UK to study Higher Education not significantly increasing for the past five years (according to government migration statistics) and as policy for EU nationals is uncertain in light of Brexit, this seminar was a timely opportunity to discuss the way forward for international student recruitment.
It also came with the Home Secretary announcing a forthcoming consultation on further reforms to the student visa system.
Delegates discussed the proposals in the consultation and their potential effects as well as considering the impact that leaving the EU could have on the number of students coming from member states, recruitment strategies and university revenue. Further topics for discussion included the changing trends in markets such as India where numbers have declined and China where they continue to increase, the opportunities for growth and expansion into other areas where recruitment is traditionally much lower such as South America and building on the growth in students from developed, English-speaking markets such as the USA.
The agenda also looked at the challenges for growth, with discussion on relationship-building with national Governments, compliance with UK visa regulations - and responding to growing competition from the USA, Australia and from nations within the EU where teaching is increasingly offered in English.
