At a time of considerable uncertainty surrounding future UK membership of EU science initiatives and following the publication of a Department for Exiting the European Union policy paper on the future of EU partnerships in science and research, this seminar considered priorities for international collaborations and partnerships in research.
Sessions focused on developing the UK’s international profile in the global research landscape, and the key challenges and opportunities associated with both leaving the EU and developing new partnerships.
Delegates discussed future involvement in Horizon 2020, availability of European Research Council funding and mobility of researchers. Further discussion assessed next steps for the Newton Fund and its links with new partners and priorities for new research partnerships, including case studies of current collaborative projects outside of the EU, the current state of global partnerships and key concerns from both R&D businesses and academics.
Attendees included university vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors and research directors, international embassies, R&D businesses, catapult centres, research consultancies and others with an interest in this area of policy and practice.
