At a time of reform and policy development across the sector, this conference brought out the latest thinking on the future of the UK’s health and safety framework.

Delegates considered the likely impact of the Brexit vote on the UK’s health and safety regime, and its current obligations under EU law - including options for future adherence to key European directives, possible implications for standards and enforcement frameworks, as well as the challenges and opportunities it will bring about for maintaining the global competitiveness of UK health and safety expertise.

The discussion followed the publication of the Health and Safety Executive’s  five year strategy - Helping Great Britain work well - and provided delegates with a timely opportunity to examine key elements of the programme and their implications for industry stakeholders - including ambitions to broaden the ownership of health and safety, simplify risk management, support innovation and the safe use of new technologies, as well as reduce regulatory burdens and costs for businesses.

Further sessions focused on the future enforcement of health and safety law, looking in particular at recently introduced sentencing guidelines for health and safety offences and their impact on deterrence, as well as the consistency of sentences and fines.

Speakers and other delegates at the conference were an informed group including Members of both Houses of Parliament, senior government officials involved in this area of public policy, together with stakeholders working across the health and safety sector - including regulators, local authorities, business groups, unions, lawyers, consultants and academics, as well as members of trade and national press.
