In the context of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union following the triggering of Article 50, this seminar set out the key priorities and unique challenges for the UK film and TV production industry.
It took place as final revisions to the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) were being negotiated in European Parliament, including the extension of European quota requirements for on demand providers and the continuation of the Country of Origin Principle, as well as new proposals for modernising EU copyright rules affecting the market for online content.
Sessions considered options for policy, and for affected sectors themselves, to mitigate negative consequences of Brexit - looking at relationships with EU member states, supporting the formation of new global working alliances, and the development of domestic media policy in the context of EU-level reforms, as well as how government and industry can most effectively work together.
Further sessions looked beyond Brexit to assess the new opportunities for UK TV and film in international markets, which focused on forming new trade agreements, encouraging greater international investment and exchange of ideas, and attracting the best talent from overseas.
