This conference examined the further steps that can be taken by government, employers and others to improve opportunity and equality at work for people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.
Policymakers, businesses and their advisors, and other stakeholders discussed issues around discrimination, careers advice, improving recruitment practices and tackling barriers to greater diversity in leadership positions.
It was timed to consider lessons that can be learnt from Government’s Racial Disparity Audit, which was published shortly before the conference took place, and found that employment rates are higher for white people than for ethnic minorities across the country.
Delegates also considered the recommendations of the Race in the Workplace review by Baroness McGregor-Smith - and key issues for their implementation - including increased transparency over diversity data, whether targets should be used to encourage employers to increase representation of BME Employees, and the benefit and challenges of conducting unconscious bias training, as well as further action that could be taken in this important area for policy.
