This seminar examined the future for Electricity Market Reform following the latest Contracts for Difference allocation round and ahead of 2018 Capacity Market auctions.

In light of the CfD auction and the £176m awarded to eleven new clean energy projects, as well as the resulting competitive strike price for Offshore Wind, delegates discussed the role of CfD auctions in creating a competitive market for renewable energy projects.

Discussion was also informed by the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee’s recommendations on competition in the energy market with discussion on the future regulatory environment for the sector and the role of the EMR delivery body going forward.

The agenda examined the challenges for maximising value for consumers and the role of CfD in relation to the establishment of new energy supplies, such as at Hinkley Point C following the recent NAO report, as well as the current thinking on developing a smart, flexible energy system following the outcome of the Department’s consultation and the subsequent report.

Further sessions assessed the priorities for delivering greater market capacity and flexibility to the UK’s energy supply alongside the investment opportunities for a low-carbon future.
