The conference examined key issues and emerging priorities for improving support for disabled students at universities in England.
Delegates considered HEFCE’s published recommendations for improving support for disabled students, looking at funding, assessment, making better use of technology, training and embedding new practices - as well as the establishment of ‘inclusive champions’ at Higher Education Providers.
Areas for discussion on the day included:
- Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA): issues arising from its reform, including latest thinking on tackling barriers to greater participation and success for disabled students;
- Social model of support for students: how this could be implemented to ensure a more inclusive curricula, improved learning and teaching environments and consistency in the provision between institutions;
- A fair representation for disabled students: what steps might be taken to ensure that complaints are listened to and acted upon for disabled students;
- Suitable provision: ensuring that equipment and services were available to all students, allowing for the removal of barriers to success; and
- The changing structure of campuses: how can modern campuses be accommodating to all students and ensure that both their learning and living environments are accessible to all.
