This conference focused on widening the effective use of technology across the UK cultural sector - and how to maximise the impact it can have on innovation, widening audiences, diversifying revenue streams and attracting investment.

Including latest examples of best practice, the agenda looked at what further support might be needed to enable the sector to meet challenges around digital transformation - with a focus on developing skills and realising the creative potential of technology.

Delegates considered investment priorities for supporting cultural organisations to understand, benchmark and improve their digital capability.

Discussion drew on findings from Arts Council England in consultations being undertaken on their next ten-year strategy, with a focus on support for the use of technology and options for public funding.

Attendees also assessed progress on the Government’s Culture is Digital framework for improving and coordinating digital expertise, and exploiting digital opportunities.

The agenda included notable examples of best practice in the innovative use of technology - including around digital engagement and widening audiences, developing immersive and interactive experiences, diversifying revenue streams and digital distribution channels, and supporting creative experimentation.

Further discussion assessed current and emerging challenges to developing a digitally-fluent sector - including issues around identifying and addressing digital skills gaps, fostering a culture of digital confidence across organisations and the sector, and priorities for developing transformational leadership.

Delegates also assessed the relationship between skills, leadership and commercial opportunities - including the value proposition, embedding digital into financial models, spreading innovation to marketing and communications, and measuring results.
