The seminar considered key priorities for developing city transportation networks and infrastructure, and assessed how best to connect suburban areas with cities and city centres.
Delegates discussed the Government’s £1.7 billion Transforming Cities Fund and its investment for new transport projects, considering key factors around delivery, accelerating productivity, boosting employment, and opportunities for economic growth in and around city regions.
In the context of the National Infrastructure Assessment, further sessions detailed priorities for supporting the growth of cities - with delegates discussing best practice for designing transport strategies around innovation, sustainability, and alleviating congestion and accessibility issues, and the challenges for promoting private investment, and addressing affordability issues like housing.
Delegates also discussed the distribution of finance between Britain’s six Combined Authorities and the competitive bidding process for smaller cities, assessing how Mayors and local authorities might collaborate with stakeholders to deliver projects, integrate existing transport networks with new systems, and overcome issues around long-term stability and the confidence of investors.
