This seminar focused on the priorities for reform of charity law and regulation in England and Wales, looking at proposals to simplify the legal framework and the future of charity governance.
It was timed to consider the options for new legislation following the publication of the Law Commission’s final report on technical issues in charity law. This included recommendations that Government implement a number of measures designed to balance operational flexibility with exposure to risk, and address key issues in relation to the remuneration, recruitment and powers of trustees, as well as the powers of the Charity Commission.
Delegates also discussed the further steps that might be taken to support the sector, ahead of the Government’s expected consultation on a new Civil Society Strategy.
In light of measures to strengthen the sector’s commitment to transparency and diversity in the revised Charity Governance Code, further sessions considered the future direction of charity governance, including accountability, new financial reporting standards and challenges for improving the public’s perception of charities.
This conference brought together policymakers and regulators with a range of stakeholders from across the charity sector - including charitable incorporated organisations, charitable companies, unincorporated associations and trusts - alongside lawyers, advisors, think tanks, campaign groups and reporting press.
