As the legal sector continued to respond to trends in new technologies and business structures, this seminar assessed the future provision of legal services in England and Wales - focusing on the next steps for competition and innovation.

It was also a timely opportunity to consider the EU referendum outcome, and emerging challenges and opportunities for legal businesses - particularly in terms of client demand, investment, skills, and the global competitiveness of UK legal services.

Delegates discussed the latest SRA marketplace report on innovation and the potential of technology to improve efficiencies and client service - including the regulator’s ambition to develop a safe ‘innovation space’ for regulated firms and individuals - as well as the OECD’s paper on the transformative impact of disruptive innovation on legal services. Further sessions focused on latest market trends and approaches to the delivery of services - including the unbundling of legal instructions, the take-up of technology, changing workforce structures and consumer expectations, as well as the emergence of non-law firms using ABS licensing as a route to the market.

The conference brought together Members of both Houses of Parliament, senior government officials and regulators involved in this area of public policy, together with law firms, chambers, legal businesses and wider professional services, investors, consultants, training providers, consumer bodies, academics and members of the national and trade press.
