This conference assessed policy opportunities to improve air quality levels in towns and cities, as the consultation on the draft UK Air Quality Plan concluded.
Sessions looked at the public health priorities for reducing pollution levels, the role of local authorities in changing the way people travel, and the implementation, funding and resource allocation challenges for councils in establishing new clean air zones across the country.
Ahead of the introduction of a daily ‘Toxicity Charge’ in London from October 2017, and of the Ultra Low Emission Zone due to be enforced from April 2019, further discussion focused on measures to reduce emissions across the road transport sector - including mitigating the release of various particulate matters, and reducing CO2 and NO2.
Delegates also discussed the effectiveness of setting limits based on engine designs - such as Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards, priorities for ensuring that diesel engines are not the only target for improving emissions and how pollution associated with other modes of transport, such as the rail sector, should best be addressed as part of a wider air quality plan.
