This conference focused on key challenges and opportunities in the student housing market at a time of uncertainty over student numbers following Brexit.
Delegates discussed the latest investment trends and the effect on the market of policy changes such as the New Homes Bonus, the review of Section 106 payments, reform of buy-to-let taxation and the extension of Houses of Multiple Occupancy regulations to all student housing.
Further key areas for discussion included the quality and affordability of existing student housing, and innovation in design of new build accommodation - as well as how the tensions between permanent residents and the student body can best be managed, and the potential for local areas realising benefits from having a student population.
Attendees included key policymakers and stakeholders including student housing providers, universities, students' unions, landlords' groups, letting agencies, developers, planning lawyers and consultancies.
